Humanoid robot has been very popular and interesting topic nowadays. Such
type of robot seems to enter our daily life in future. Therefore, the chance for
the robot and human to physically contact each other will increase. In this
case, if the robot doesn't have the sense of touch, it will become very
dangerous. Moreover, if the sense of touch that the robot felt can be
transmitted to human, it will become more convenience especially for remote
control or teleoperation. If this kind of tactile display technology is become
possible, human on earth can feels the feeling of the stone that the robot took
up in Mars.
The human is skillfully identifying the environments and objects by using their five sense of the sight, hear, touch, taste, and smell. In order to provide these kind of intelligent feeling to the machine, the sensor that can measure these senses is necessary. In present, intelligent sensor to sense sight, hear, taste and smell has been developed, however the development of tactile sensor is quite difficult and the development is highly expected.
The tactile sensing is a sense that can be measured by starting to come in contact with the object. Therefore, the contact analysis of the object and the sensor is indispensable. It is one of the most challenging areas for the mechanical researcher. In our laboratory, the development of tactile sensor is consider so that it can be attached in the robot. This research has received the high appraisal, where in fiscal year 2002 and 1996 we have received commendation from Japan Society Of Mechanical Engineers for the development of this tactile sensor.
Moreover, in our laboratory, to assume the hint in advance development of tactile sensor, the mechanism of human's tactile sensing is measured in experiment and mechanics of calculation. High attention is gained in this research by an inside and outside researchers of psychology and physiology.
Overall, the research theme is not become useful right now because the requirement is pursues more to transparent than the needs. However, we are also planning the development of tactile sensor and tactile display for notebook computer. Because the usage can be various, this research can dig up the needs of it.
